After more than two decades in the Camino Ramon location, San Ramon City Permit Center moved to a larger space on the west side of Crow Canyon Road. This new location is a temporary space to be used for an interim time period until the final City Center can be built. Due to the temporary nature of this project, cost control and reusability were high priorities. Interform’ s mission was to design an open, bright space that was inviting to customers. An important requirement was to provide much needed counter space for drawing-plan review. Key challenges were an aggressive schedule, a constrained budget and a flexible workflow so that employees could issue building permits more efficiently.

The combination of architectural pendant lights, a warm color palette with bright accent colors and daylight from the adjacent windows helps brighten the space. A textured carpet tile in neutral warm tones compliments the color scheme and is durable enough to handle the high traffic of a busy government agency.

The integration of modular furniture translated to 30% cost savings and a 50% reduction in schedule over traditional custom-built millwork. The use of modular furniture supports the City’s desire to have assets that can be reused when they move to their permanent location. Here, Kimball Office Cetra workstations are used in place of custom millwork. When the City moves to their final location, the Permit Center can be disassemble and rebuilt into standard workstations. This strategy constitutes a long term reuse and conversion approach based upon a standard “kit of parts”. Similarly, furniture walls were used rather than construction walls, as the city had completed hard construction work, and desired a full solution that could be built by the furniture vendor with a few weeks’ time.

The result is a well-designed environment that is dynamic, fresh and functional for both guests and staff.
